a brand without the “brand”

without comments

My favourite branding site BrandNew has a great article up on WolfOlins latest work for “Living Proof“. I am really intrigued by the concept of, for the sake of this post, what I will now refer to as “Donut Branding”.

Is a donut still a donut without its hole? Can a donut hole exist without the donut around it? Can a brand exist without a logo? Can a logo exist without its brand?

the chinese typewriter

I could never imagine how you could ever make a typewriter for the 5000 or more different chinese characters, but it had apparently exsisted for a brief point in time. See more of it here.

modern take on tape

without comments

A fantastic reference to the music recording media of old. This digital music player not only looks like a cassette tape but lets you relive the days where rewinding or forwarding required the state of the art “sticking a finger in the hole” method. Sweet!

The results for the world press photo has just been announced. Head over to CR Blog to see all the pictures and get a brief writeup. Although the image below did not win the coveted premier award, it was my favourite of the lot.

universe ring

without comments

I do not know how better to describe this item, except for how beautiful it is and how much I want to lay my grubby hands on it, so in the designer’s own words… “A continuous ring, delicately proportioned, beautifully polished and seemingly flawless. There is only one tiny imperfection. A speck, no larger than a piece of dust. At a glance, it is barely noticeable. Upon close examination, it appears intentional and more clearly defined. Only magnification reveals the actual object set within the miniature interior. It is a model of the known universe. Inspired by the writing of Stephen Hawking and loosely based on the anthropic theory to22 puts our daily pursuits into perspective and reminds us that we are always a part of something bigger. “

I love tagclouds. They are beautiful, functional, and a perfect representation of the the Wed2.0 way of organising information. Wordle takes the idea and makes it an easy to use wordart tagcloud generator. Now everything can be pretty!

wake up your feelings

without comments

HP has for a long time gone the opposite direction of how you should be selling computers. From the initial launch of their “The Computer is Personal Again” tagline, to the use of the controversial “Nightmare Before Christmas” fonts, HP has stayed true to their new brand proposition. This has also brought them into the realm of “Touch Computer”, a real great example of how a branding idea leads into product development. Whether they took over Dell as the largest PC manufacturer into world because of this new positioning we will never know for sure, but we do know that it stands out, is fresh and perfect for the craft-hungry hand-made new economy.

I have to say that I never was a real fan of any of their ads as it somehow all seems too gimmicky and rather sterile. The “Wake Up Your Feelings” website however hits all the right spots with amazin graphics, cute characters and beautiful score and voiceover. Will I buy a computer from HP? Not likely. Will I have them on my Apple as a desktop image? Yes please!

what a beautiful bulb

without comments

Bulbs are seldom the centrepiece in any interior and rarely steal the limelight (pun intended) from the lamps that they are installed in. Along comes the G08 LED Warm White light bulb from Chinavision and suddenly I find myself going “Wow. What a beautiful bulb.”

Buy it for roughly S$45 here.
