from ten to sixty in a flip of the page
French vogue recently did an interesting article on Eniko Mihalik by transforming her from 10 to 60. Quite an amazing feat.

big green chicken

I am on a budget. I just bought the new macbook pro and now need to scrimp and save every penny to be able to afford my next meal. Then I see Jamie Hayon’s Big Green Rocking Chicken and decides to sell a kidney (or two) to get one. Thats how much I want it!
designer traffic lights
Art Lebedev first shot to worldwide fame with their concept of the OLED keyboard, with the premise of being able to programme every single key to your hearts content. They have been able to keep up with the level of innovation and have now come up with an interesting concept for traffic lights and zebra crossings. These to me seem really functional and just simply make sense, which is what traffic-furniture needs to do. I am loving the sharp lines and really chic led lighting.

the king has lost his wallet

Once in a while, somewhere, someone comes up with such a ridiculously good marketing idea that it makes you stand up, take note and be in awe.
Burger King decided that losing wallets with real cash inside will be a good way to sell burgers, and they are right! Along with cash bills, ranging fro $1 to $100 USD, in the wallets are also receipts, fake IDs and Burger King discount cards.
Brilliant!

mail art

Around a hundred A6 sized cards sent to Margaret Huber from 2004 to 2006 from Japan, Finland, Spain, Russia and England. Hair, fish, a sachet of white powder, a piece of broken record etc. were sent to test the postal system. Only three cards never reached their destination. This project made it into the book POSTCARD , which features over 100 artists, illustrators, photographers, designers and studios/collectives from all around the world. Designed by the lovely people at FL@33, it will be released worldwide this September by Laurence King Publishing.

how google got its logo

An interesting behind the curtains look at how Google got to its logo, and in my opinion, became successful inspite of it.

world economic forum design manifesto
“Throughout history, design has been an agent of change. It helps us to understand the changes in the world
around us, and to turn them to our advantage by translating them into things that can make our lives better.
Now, at a time of crisis and unprecedented change in every area of our lives – economic, political,
environmental, societal and in science and technology – design is more valuable than ever.”
Though not groundbreaking nor thoroughly visionary, it is a beginning to a conversation that I am personally invested in.

beautiful paintings
I am loving the colours and movement captured in these paintings by Grant Haffner. A very serene look at the everyday roads and lamposts.

minimal l.e.d watch
while I have constantly drooled over delicious watch designs that continues to defy conventions, along comes hiranao tsuboi and turns the whole concept of watches on its head by making, and I would declare this, the most minimal watch ever!

flat bulb

How sweet is this? The ‘flat bulb’ is designed by Korean designer Joonhuyn Kim, comes flat packed, therefore less packaging and space wastage!

san serriffe

San Serriffe is a small republic located in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semi-colon-shaped islands. With Bodoni, the capital in the North and beautiful sandy stretches – the best found at Gill Sands – in the South. While many may consider San Serriffe to be a small semicolonial State, British newspaper The Guardian considered it big enough to publish a seven-page “special report” about San Serriffe. Big enough, in fact, to fool an entire Nation!

the good old days
curse of the golden flower

Based loosely on a 1934 chinese play “Thunderstorm”, this is a visual feast that left me undecided on whether I liked the dragon and phoenix emblazoned costumes more, or the endless bouncing breasts, or the rainbow-hued crystal curtains, or the thousands of bodies plied on top of another, or the “smashing my son down with my golden belt till he is flat against the floor” scene more. If anything, watch it for the moment when Gong-Li spits in brilliant venomous whispers “I just want you dead”. More pictures after the jump.
